Best Dating Sites (or Apps) For People In Juneau Alaska

There are tons of factors that mean Alaska is full of single people. However, not everyone has an easy time finding someone that they get along with. Whether it’s the isolation or the fact that most guys spend too much time on fishing boats it makes finding stimulating conversation hard at times.

Or, as my friend summarized the dating situation in Alaska, “The odds are good but the goods are odd…”

This means that many people, especially those in cities like Juneau, have turned to dating apps to try and find both friends and relationships. But which ones are best?

Well, before I get into it, I will say that I’m not exactly a connoisseur of dating sites. However, I have lived here long enough and I have enough friends my age who use them all the time, so I have a decent idea of what works and what doesn’t.

Here are a couple of stats for you first: Juneau is 51.3% male and 48.7% female, according to information from the 2020 Census.

The marriage rate among Juneau adults is about 49%, which seems a little high to me, but I guess I don’t actually know all 32,000+ people here.

From this information, we can conclude that there are a lot of eligible single people here in Juneau, Alaska, many of whom are presumably looking for a date. Let’s dive into how you might go about finding a potential partner here.

Tinder

The world’s number one dating app is also Juneau, Alaska’s number one dating app, it turns out.

I go to pub trivia two or three nights a week here in town at different bars and at least twice a week, I overhear someone talking about a person they met on Tinder.

When I said I had never used any of these dating services, I was correct – in a sense. I did download Tinder about five years ago and set up a profile to win a bet with a coworker.

She got 5 matches the first day and I got zero in a week, so I promptly uninstalled the app. I guess the profile picture of my face pasted over Christopher Reeve as Superman might have had something to do with it.

My friends who have normal profiles and didn’t treat it as a joke have all had regular matches, particularly in the summer during the tourist season. Juneau gets a lot of seasonal employees during the summer from other places, which makes it easier to find a match.

Facebook Dating

I wouldn’t have expected this to be one of the most popular, but it is. I set up a profile at one point in order to convince a friend of mine that he should get back on Facebook and meet women.

I completely forgot about it, because it was on the backup account that I use in case anything happens to my main profile.

Over the course of about six months, there was a steady stream of one or two likes every week, which is pretty good for a profile that I threw together at my friend’s house in just a few minutes.

OK Cupid

OK Cupid is definitely not one that I would have thought of for a town of about 30,000 people, but I know for a fact that it is used up here.

The story I wrote in the last section about my friend reminded me of the time I ran into him downtown and he desperately tried to get me to leave the bar because he had a date coming who he had met on OK Cupid.

It didn’t work out between them because she ended up moving back to Australia like a week after that, but he did tell me later that she was the fourth woman he had met on that website.

eHarmony

If you’re looking for a serious relationship, eHarmony is an excellent choice and a viable option in Juneau.

Despite the controversy around their claims about a “scientifically-proven algorithm” designed to find your perfect match, it does work. It’s more expensive than the others, but anyone paying for a dating service is probably not afraid of commitment.

At my high school reunion, I saw the guy who sat by me in Algebra II/Trig with his wife.
They told everyone a funny story about how they met at an Italian restaurant during the Super Bowl because neither of them cared about football.

I remembered that this guy was allergic to pine nuts, which are a key ingredient in pesto. No chance he stumbled upon this woman at an Italian restaurant.

I took him aside later and asked him about it. He sheepishly told me they met on eHarmony while she was in town working at a tourist shop, but they were both embarrassed.

There’s no stigma to online dating anymore, though. People realized it’s better than spending the rest of your life alone because you’re afraid of potential social embarrassment.

I thanked the guy for his honesty and told him I’d keep my mouth shut.

Places in Town

That’s right! The title of this article refers to both websites and physical locations (or “sites”, if you will) to meet a potential partner. Wordplay!

If you’re not into online dating or would otherwise prefer to meet someone in person, don’t give up!

My best advice is to find a place or an activity you like and wait for something to happen organically.

Just make sure it’s a reasonable place. I love going to the bowling alley here, but even if I weren’t already planning on getting married to a certain woman one day, I wouldn’t go to Pinz LLC to find love.

A bowling alley is more likely to contain couples than a single person looking to meet someone new.

Another example, hiking trails are fun, but not a great place to meet. Most people do not like being approached when you’re the only two people for half a mile in each direction.

If you want to meet someone who likes drinking beer, go to Devil’s Club Brewery. If you want to meet someone who likes karaoke, go to the Alaskan or the Crystal Saloon.

If you’re religious, you should start attending church services here and maybe you’ll meet someone.

A friend of mine was always fond of saying, “I don’t expect I’ll meet my future wife for the first time at the Alaskan Bar and Hotel during last call at 2 AM on Sunday morning.”

Can You Recap That?

Yeah, no problem. For apps, Tinder is your best bet. If you don’t mind paying a little more, try eHarmony. For free websites, try OK Cupid. If you’re a decent writer, try Facebook Dating. If you have the courage to talk to people in person, that works, too.

Good luck to you on your quest and hopefully by the 2030 Census comes around, you will be part of that 48% marriage rate in Juneau!
