If you’re looking for an unforgettable vacation destination, then look no further than Sitka, Alaska.

This picturesque town is situated on the Pacific Coast and boasts a variety of activities and attractions that will ensure you have an incredible stay. However, most people only visit the city via a cruise ship and miss out on most of what the area has to offer.

If you’re able to spend a little longer in Sitka you’ll be able to really enjoy the people and local amenities (mostly fishing and outdoor stuff…)

But where should you plan on staying if you don’t have a cruise ship to return to?

Well, luckily, I’ve had a good amount of experience in touring the town and have a few options/recommendations as to the best hotels in Sitka.

But first, let me catch you up on a few things that you should know before booking a stay.

Things To Know About Staying In Sitka

These are probably the most common questions or sticking points that people have when finding a hotel in Sitka. Hopefully, this list will save you from having to make too many phone calls to hotels to figure out what exactly to expect.

  • Sitka is on Chicaghof Island in the Alexander Archipelago. The city is served by Sitka Rocky Gutierrez Airport on Japonski Island, located across the O’Connell Bridge.
  • The airport is served by Alaska Airlines, Delta Airlines, and a few regional carriers. The runaway is slightly shorter than most other airports, so passengers should expect a bit of a rough landing.
  • There are no accommodations on Japonski Island, outside of the occasional Airbnb that might show up.
  • All of the listed hotels offer free WiFi for guests. Some may also add a paid upgrade for faster download speeds.
  • Although there are a few exceptions, many hotels in Sitka are either in the heart of downtown, in the Sitka National Historical Park area or a few miles away on Halibut Point Road.
  • As fishing is one of the most popular industries in Southeast Alaska, there are several fishing lodges in town that combine charters with a place to stay.
  • Most places offer airport shuttles but these change all the time depending on availability and the time of year, so it’s recommended to check the booking website when making reservations.
  • Despite being the largest city by area in the United States (over 5,000 square miles!), a vast majority of that is wilderness and Sitka is extremely walkable. There are also taxicabs available but unfortunately, the city is not served by either Uber or Lyft.
  • There are also several campgrounds and RV parks in and around the city, offering both traditional and backwoods camping experiences.

The Sitka Hotel

Right in the heart of beautiful downtown Sitka is the aptly named Sitka Hotel, which recently underwent extensive renovations. It is commonly used for longer stays in Sitka, due to its convenient location and lower prices.

Its central location next to the Mean Queen restaurant, Ernie’s Old Time Saloon, and several gift shops makes walking trips around the city incredibly easy. You can easily stop by the hotel to drop off your purchases instead of carrying them around.

The Aspen Suites Hotel

If you’re looking for a luxury option that only offers suites, the Aspen Hotel downtown is an excellent choice. It is located near the heart of downtown and offers a business center, a corporate meeting room, and some suites with kitchenettes.

Across the street, you’ll find a bank with an ATM, a Subway restaurant, and the highly underrated Wildflour Bakery and Cafe.

Longliner Lodge and Suites

One of the top fishing lodges in all of Southeast Alaska, the beautiful Longliner Lodge and Suites offers charter fishing packages, a full-service breakfast every morning, and free laundry machines for guest use.

Just a few blocks away you’ll find Ludvig’s Bistro and Wine Bar, the Pioneer Bar, and Turnaround Park. It is also close to many local shops and other points of interest.

Sitka Getaway

Just a few blocks from downtown is an amazing and relatively new Airbnb called The Sitka Getaway. It has three spacious bedrooms and can sleep up to five guests.

Just down the street are Crescent Park, the Russian Bishop’s House, and the flower garden at St. Gregory’s. A little further to the east are the Sheldon Jackson Center and the Sitka Sound Science Museum.

Westmark Sitka

One of the few chain hotels in the city, the Westmark Sitka is located in the heart of downtown and is perfect for a romantic getaway, with seaside suites, a restaurant, and a bar located on the first floor.

If you’d like to complete the “dinner and a movie” experience, the Coliseum Theatre is just down the street. There are also several art galleries nearby and it’s just a short walk from the famous St. Michael’s Cathedral.

Eagle Bay Inn

Located just a few miles from downtown, the Eagle Bay Inn is a cozy little hotel with 16 rooms, focused on bringing the comforts of home to you. Each room has an Alaskan theme and a 55-inch Roku TV, making it perfect for a romantic getaway.

It is just down the street from the Harbor Mountain Brewing Company, Cascade Convenience, and the post office, making it a perfect starting point for a walk around town that finishes with a cold, small-batch IPA.

Baranof Lodge

Formerly known as the Super 8 by Wyndham, the Baranof Lodge is not to be confused with the Baranof Wilderness Lodge, which is 20 miles from the city by float plane or boat. Its spacious rooms and incredible views have made the location a favorite for many visitors.

Art lovers will definitely not want to miss the nearby Raindance Gallery, filled with beautiful, handcrafted works of art, located just around the corner from the hotel. It is also close to Sitka Pel’Meni, which serves the delicious Slavic dumpling of the same name.

Totem Square Hotel and Marina

Sitting on the waterfront by the bridge to the airport on Japonski Island is the Totem Square Hotel, with 73 beautiful rooms that offer either an amazing view of the sea or of the city center.

Kenny’s Wok and Teriyaki is just across the street, offering some of the finest Asian food in the city. One block south is the Baranof Castle State Historical Site, commonly called Castle Hill by the locals. It’s where Alaska was officially purchased by the United States!

Frontier Charters and Lodge

If you’re looking for a great location that combines lodging and fishing charters, you’ll love the Frontier Lodge just a few miles from the city center. Their legendary breakfasts and comfortable rooms provide a first-class experience.

Just a few blocks away is the Sea Mountain Golf Course, which features nine holes and a driving range. There is also a full-service pro shop on site that offers equipment rentals.

Fly In Fish Inn

A gorgeous boutique-style hotel near the water, the Fly In Fish Inn offers the unique experience of a fishing charter combined with float plane-based flightseeing and wildlife viewing. There is also a full-service bar on the first floor.

It is a short walk from Lakeside Grocery/Liquor Store and the Fish Eye Coffee shop. About a half-mile in the other direction, you’ll find St. Michael’s Russian Orthodox Cathedral.

Inn at Raven’s Peek

For a traditional bed and breakfast experience in Sitka, the Inn at Raven’s Peek is an excellent choice. Run by a local physician and her husband, there are two rooms and a standalone cabin, all of which have their own private hot tubs!

Just a few blocks north, you’ll find Halibut Point Crab and Chowder, one of the city’s finest seafood restaurants. A few blocks south, you’ll find the Harbor Mountain Trail, one of the most popular in the city.

Hannah’s Bed and Breakfast

Another excellent bed and breakfast option is Hannah’s, located about a ten-minute walk from downtown. Unlike other B&Bs, it offers a refrigerated breakfast that guests can enjoy while exploring the town.

It’s a short walk over to the manmade Swan Lake, which was created by the Russians over 200 years ago. It is also just a few blocks away from the Market Center grocery store and the famous Heart Lake Trail.

Baranof Wilderness Lodge

If you’d like a true fishing getaway, the Baranof Wilderness Lodge could be an excellent choice. Located 20 air miles from Sitka, a float plane will pick you up from the city docks and take you directly to the lodge.

Visitors can enjoy fishing, sightseeing, wildlife viewing, and much more. It is located in Warm Springs Bay, named for the natural hot springs that lie underneath. It’s a bit spendy but most who have gone have said that the experience is well worth it.

Harbor Heights Penthouse

High atop the Troutte Center downtown, the Harbor Heights Penthouse (a Vrbo offering) provides a high-class atmosphere, four bedrooms, and amazing views of the town, Mt. Edgecumbe, and the water.

Located near the O’Connell Bridge to Japonski Island, it is a short walk from the Mean Queen restaurant, the Harrigan Centennial Hall event center, and the town’s public library.

Dove Island Lodge

If you’ve ever wanted to go fishing on a private island, Dove Island Lodge might be just the place you’ve been looking for. In addition to deep sea, freshwater, and flyfishing, they also offer eco tours and a spa. It is accessible by float plane from the city dock.

Their wide-ranging breakfast offerings are perfect for every diet, from meat lovers to vegans but the main dining attractions are the all-you-can-eat lunch buffet and the five-course dinner served every night.
